Ingredients
Scale
Sausages and Buns
- 4 Italian sausages (pork, chicken, or plant-based)
- 4 sturdy sandwich rolls or hoagie buns
Vegetables and Seasonings
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow onion, sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Condiments
- Mustard or mayonnaise for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Grill: Start by heating your grill to medium heat to prepare for cooking the sausages.
- Grill the Sausages: Place the sausages on the grill and cook for 12–15 minutes, turning them occasionally to ensure they are evenly browned and fully cooked inside.
- Sauté Peppers and Onions: While the sausages cook, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced red and green bell peppers and yellow onion. Season with dried oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Caramelize the Vegetables: Sauté the peppers and onions for 10–12 minutes until they soften and caramelize, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. Add balsamic vinegar in the last minute if you want extra depth of flavor.
- Toast the Buns: During the last few minutes of sausage grilling, place the sandwich rolls on the grill and lightly toast them, enhancing their flavor and texture.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Place one grilled sausage inside each toasted bun. Top generously with the sautéed peppers and onions. Add mustard or mayonnaise if desired for extra moisture and flavor.
- Serve Hot: Serve the sandwiches immediately while warm, perfect for a satisfying and hearty meal.
Notes
- You can choose spicy or sweet sausages based on your taste preference.
- For added flavor, melt provolone or mozzarella cheese over the grilled sausages before assembling the sandwich.
- Leftover sautéed peppers and onions make a great addition to omelets or pasta dishes.
