Description
This easy one-pan gnocchi recipe combines Italian sausage, peas, and potato gnocchi for a quick and comforting dinner. Cooked in a skillet with savory garlic, onions, and a touch of cream or chicken broth, it’s flavorful and perfect for a weeknight meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Dairy
- 12 ounces Italian sausage (mild or spicy, casings removed)
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup chicken broth or heavy cream (for a saucier dish)
Vegetables and Herbs
- 1 small onion (finely diced)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 cup frozen peas
- Fresh parsley or basil (for garnish)
Other Ingredients
- 16 ounces potato gnocchi
- ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
- Red pepper flakes (to taste)
- Olive oil (for cooking, approximately 1-2 tablespoons)
Instructions
- Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil to warm up.
- Cook the sausage: Add the Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked through. Drain any excess grease from the pan if necessary.
- Sauté the onion: Add the finely diced onion to the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until it softens and becomes translucent.
- Add the garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant to infuse the dish with aroma.
- Cook the gnocchi: Add the potato gnocchi directly to the skillet. Spread it out evenly and let it cook undisturbed for 2 to 3 minutes to develop golden, crispy edges.
- Sauté the gnocchi further: Stir the gnocchi gently and continue cooking for another 3 to 4 minutes until the gnocchi are lightly crisped on all sides.
- Add peas and liquid: Stir in the frozen peas. If the pan looks dry, add the chicken broth or heavy cream to create a saucier consistency and prevent sticking.
- Season the dish: Season with salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes according to your taste preferences.
- Finish and serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top and garnish with fresh parsley or basil. Serve warm.
Notes
- Use mild or spicy Italian sausage based on your heat preference.
- For a richer dish, use heavy cream instead of chicken broth.
- You can substitute fresh peas if available, just reduce cooking time accordingly.
- Leftover cooked sausage can be used to save prep time.
- Gnocchi should be cooked until golden and crispy for best texture.
- Adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to your liking.
