Easy to prepare and bake, they’re a classic American treat that’s sure to please any crowd.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Muffin Batter:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Streusel Topping:

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed

For the Glaze (optional):

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 teaspoons milk or cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners or grease it well to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the Streusel Topping: In a small bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Use a fork or pastry cutter to cut in the cold butter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. Set this streusel aside while you prepare the batter.
  3. Prepare the Muffin Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir just until combined; avoid overmixing to keep the muffins tender.
  4. Fill Muffin Cups and Add Streusel: Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups, filling each about two-thirds full. Generously sprinkle the streusel topping over each muffin batter portion to create that signature crumb topping.
  5. Bake: Place the muffin tin in the oven and bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Once done, let the muffins cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Make and Add the Glaze (Optional): In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk (start with 1 teaspoon and add more if needed), and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle this glaze over the cooled muffins for an extra touch of sweetness.

Notes

  • These muffins freeze very well; however, skip glazing before freezing and add the glaze after thawing for the best texture and taste.
  • For additional flavor and texture, try stirring in chopped pecans or mini chocolate chips into the muffin batter before baking.
