Description

This rich and creamy Caramelized Onion Dip combines sweet, deeply caramelized onions with a smooth blend of cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Perfect as a party appetizer or snack, it offers a savory and tangy flavor that pairs beautifully with chips, pita, or fresh vegetables. Easy to prepare on the stovetop and chill, it’s a crowd-pleaser that can also be made in advance.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine or water (optional)

Dip Base

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter together with the olive oil. Add the thinly sliced onions along with salt, black pepper, and sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 40 minutes until the onions turn a deep golden brown and are soft and caramelized. If the onions start to stick to the pan, deglaze by adding the white wine or water and scraping up the browned bits. Remove from heat and let the onions cool.
  2. Prepare the Dip Base: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, and onion powder, stirring well to combine into a uniform mixture.
  3. Combine Onions and Dip: Once the caramelized onions are cool, finely chop them and fold them gently into the cream cheese mixture, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dip.
  4. Chill the Dip: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dip for at least one hour to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to thicken.
  5. Serve: Before serving, optionally garnish with chopped fresh chives. Serve with your choice of potato chips, pita chips, or fresh vegetable sticks for dipping.

Notes

  • This dip can be prepared up to 3 days ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
  • Excellent served with potato chips, pita chips, or fresh cut vegetables like carrots and celery.
  • For a tangier variation, substitute Greek yogurt in place of sour cream.
  • To make it gluten-free, ensure the chips or dippers you serve are gluten-free.
